Diversity and Prejudice in Primary Schools
By engaging in our Diversity & Prejudice programme, primary schools can work towards ensuring a safer environment for all their pupils. Every child has the right to achieve their potential. These workshops are designed to tackle some of the issues that may prevent that, due to feelings of vulnerability. We encourage all pupils to accept difference, whether of religion, race, sexuality or gender.
Hannah Underground
*New* This dual facilitated mask and physical theatre performance assembly continues the story of Hannah, a Kurdish refugee, who is now living in London and suffering bullying at school. Caught in a power cut on the Underground she and her fellow passengers learn the truth about each other's lives, including that of the pupil who has been bullying her.
Workshops
Workshops provide an opportunity for pupils to explore, debate or celebrate issues of Empathy, Diversity, Acceptance, Peer Pressure and Co-Operation.
The use of drama allows exploration of these difficult topics in a safe environment, enabling pupils to tackle sensitive issues and empower them to reach their own conclusions.
The different types of prejudice that exist within society are touched upon, but we do not go into lengthy detail. We look at prejudice and its consequences as a whole and encourage empathy, understanding and tolerance for other people’s choices, while empowering children to make smart choices.
Workshops encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour and to develop team building co-operation skills and tools for conflict resolution.
NB:
The workshops are led by 2 facilitators and are suitable for up to 30 pupils. The pupils can either be from the same class or be selected by the school as those pupils who present the most challenging behaviour.
The workshops can also be offered as a peer facilitation training workshop for pupils who may already be involved with a mentoring or buddy system within the school.
At all times our facilitators endeavour to work in the third person. We discourage personal disclosure so that no child is made to feel vulnerable.
Content of the workshops for each age group differs and is always tailored in consultation with each individual school.
