Hidden Hope
This single facilitated interactive workshop tells the story of one slave family on the run and explains how the underground railroad worked through the use of quilts and the symbols sewn onto them.
Josephine, a nine year old black girl born into slavery, has heard other slaves whispering about freedom and one night her mother explains what it is and the importance of the symbols she sews into her quilts. Each symbol carries a message to runaway slaves to help them know what to do at any stage in the journey.Hidden Hope can be delivered in a number of ways using art or drama. Class-sized art workshops look at symbols, patterns and printing can produce either a wall hanging or individual pieces. Interactive story telling workshops, including drama exercises tell the story and allow pupils to explore the characters’ experiences. Whole school or Key Stage assemblies can be followed by drama or art workshops. Suitable for: Key Stage 1 and 2 Curriculum: In addition to contributing directly to a greater understanding of Black History, these pieces also support Citizenship, Units 5, 7, 8 and History Unit 20.
