History in Primary Schools

Caboodle Arts supports the teaching of history in primary schools because we believe that by exploring and understanding our past we can begin to acquire a greater understanding of who we are and how our world evolved. By learning about our history we can make better choices, develop a greater understanding of the present and, hopefully, avoid past mistakes. A study of history also trains the mind and helps pupils to think clearly and process information.

Sennedjem: a skilled artist works in the tomb of Tutankhamun. He explains the importance of the tombs, art and artifacts to the beliefs of the ancient Egyptians and their journey to the afterlife and gives pupils a hands-on lesson in how the tomb paintings were created.

Thomas Tudor: the son of a Yeoman farmer is born in the yearof Henry VII's coronation. During his mysteriously long life he becomes court musician, barber/surgeon, physician, accident-prone pastry chef to Elizabeth 1 and final Shakespearean actor. From farm to Court, at sea or in London during the plague, Thomas experiences riches and poverty and an insider's view to some of the great events of the period.

Caboodle uses talking heads and living history characters to employ drama techniques and visualization, guiding pupils into past lives and experiences and then using what emerges as a platform for cross curricula work. Immersing themselves into the life of a child in the Blitz, an Evacuee, a Tudor barber/surgeon or an Egyptian tomb builder, pupils will be inspired into follow on work such as letter, diary and creative writing, art, information gather, DT and health awareness projects.
