Nelson Mandela
Single Facilitated Living History or Interactive Workshops
One of the most iconic figures of his generation, Nelson Mandela has come to personify non-violence and reconciliation.
Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid activist within the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC) at a time when violence was espoused by all parties in the fight for and against multi-racialism.In 1962 he was convicted of sabotage and other charges and was sentenced to life in prison. On his release 27 years later, his 'walk to freedom' was broadcast around the world and his immediate message of reconciliation came to symbolise a feeling of hope that, against the odds, South Africa could make a peaceful transition towards demoncracy. When the ANC became the new government, Nelson Mandela became the first black president of South Africa and was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace prize with F. W. de Klerk, the white South African president who finally had the courage to free Mandela and work with him towards transition. Suitable for: Key Stage 1 and 2 Curriculum: In addition to contributing directly to a greater understanding of Black History, these pieces also support the Citizenship and History curricula.
