Roman Soldiers & Other Black Pioneers
Interactive Story-Telling Drama Workshop
Many still believe that black history in this country dates back only a century or so, or that it began only through slavery. On the contrary, there is good evidence that the first ‘black’ pioneers arrived as freely recruited soldiers in the Roman Army nearly two thousand years ago.
This workshop focuses on three main groups of people who chose to come – or stay in – a country so far from their homes. Beginning with Roman army recruits from Morocco, we move to medieval Court servants and musicians and from there to post-war arrivals on The Windrush answering an advertisement to come to the ‘Mother Country’.
We explore the feelings and experiences of these people who, while free and determined to be active participants in their adopted country, nevertheless experienced discrimination and were often reminded of how differently they were viewed from others.
Suitable for: Key Stage 1 and 2
Curriculum: In addition to contributing directly to a greater understanding of Black History, these pieces also support the Citizenship and History curricula.
