Workshops available include both armed and unarmed fighting skills. Armed stage fighting workshops can include theatrical adaptations of fencing such as rapier and dagger work, small sword and broadsword. Simple routines can be taught using wooden swords, followed, where time allows, with one-to-one work using authentic replica swords. Workshops like these provide a particularly effective way of bringing many of Shakespeare's plays to dramatic life. Unarmed fighting includes illusory slaps, punches, kicks, throwing and holding techniques. Staged combat traces its origins back to antiquity and many early forms of dance are based on 'warrior' movements. More recent forms relate to the medieval period onwards. The medieval tournament and joust are classical examples of competitive ritualised mock battle. In the Late Middle Ages, theatrical fencing bouts, with or without choreography, also became popular with fencing schools. Theatrical fighting became prominent in Elizabeth drama and it is thought that Richard Tarleton, a member both of Shakespeare's acting company and of the London Masters of Defence weapons guild, was among the first fight directors in the modern sense and it is especially appropriate that workshops relating to these skills should be available to support and enhance the study of Shakespeare. However, stage combat includes any form of choreographed fighting, so the options are endless! Workshops are led by fully qualified fight instructors who provide fantastic learning opportunities within their first class workshops. Return from
